Are You Staying at Mandalay Bay?

So I just heard Griff and Lee on eBay Radio talking about eBay Open 2018 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.  Griff brought up the fact that some eBayers are talking about staying at other hotels to save money.  My advice?  Don’t do it!  And here’s why…

First of all, staying at a hotel other than the one at which the conference takes place is like living off campus freshman year instead of living in the dorms.  If you stay at Mandalay Bay, you’ll meet eBay sellers everywhere you go: in the elevator, at the buffet, at the gift shop.  This won’t happen if you stay in a condo off the strip or at a hotel at the other end of the city.  I don’t know about you, but one of the big reasons I go to eBay Open is to network.

Another reason to stay at Mandalay Bay is that at some point, you will get tired!  Every once in a while, the food, the drink, and the networking will make you wish for your bed.  If you’re staying at Mandalay Bay, you’ll be able to run up to your room and take a napper snapper so that you’re ready for the next networking event or workshop.  And if you forget something in your room,  it won’t take you forever to get it.

Finally, it’s hot!  Do you really want to deal with the 117-degree heat every time you leave the hotel?  I don’t.  Trust me.  The heat is INSANE!  It was so hot during the eBay Open 2016 event, that we couldn’t hang out by the pool unless we were in the pool.  No joke.  It’s much safer to avoid the outside when you’re visiting Vegas in July.

Rooms are only $89 a night, but if you want to save money, I recommend getting a roommate!  When I attended my first eBay event in Chicago, I went to the eBay boards and found one.  It was easy, and the lady I roomed with wasn’t an ax murderer.  She was just a normal eBay seller looking for someone to share a room.

  1. I’m staying across the street at the Tropicana which is easily accessible with the tram that runs from the Excalibur to Mandalay Bay so I don’t have to drive (stayed downtown last year and that was too far). The Mandalay Bay is $89 per night BUT charges another $37 per night for a “resort fee” and then taxes on top. Total for 4 nights? $557. Tropicana total? $273 (they only charge an extra $14 per night and their rooms are only $50). I’ll take the slight inconvenience of the tram and a short walk across the street and save $284! That pays for the price of registration!

I thought the Tropicana’s resort fee was $35 + taxes?

Oh, and thanks for the comment!

And isn’t the Tropicana almost a mile away or is that a different Tropicana?

  2. Colleen M. says:

We too did the comparative pricing thing one year at eBay Open, thought it would be no big deal staying only four hotels away… have fun using the tram… saving money is always good… but didn’t realize the heat and it was MILES of walking to eBay’s events!!!!

Four hotels away? Oh no! Thanks for the comment!

  3. Amy says:

Yep. We stayed somewhere different than the event one year and will NEVER do it again.

Thank for reading! Another tip I should have mentioned is that you can upgrade once you get to the hotel. We paid $50 a night extra at the MGM and got a deluxe, super pricey suite. Sooooo worth it!
